Margaret Georgina Coutts was the illigetimate daughter of Mary Coutts and John Wilson. John Wilson was the son of an Earl in Scotland for whom Mary Coutts cleaned. When Mary fell pregnant with Margaret the family paid her off and Margaret was born in 1874.
William Charles Murrell was born in La Harve France about 1876. His family were exiled Huguenots, who returned to France shortly before the birth of their children so they would be born on French soil.
William was a wine merchant who went to Cambridge University and possibly rowed as a Cambridge Blue. He was expelled from the University as apparently had a liking for booze, betting and women. His expulsion is reported to have come about when a woman was found in his rooms. He met Margaret Coutts while selling wine to the pub where she worked. They married in 1896 but split before 1901 when Margaret gave birth to her first son with John Lisle. She was never divorced but had been separated from William for seven years, so was deemed free to remarry, although she claimed an army pension for each of her three husbands.
Margaret went on to live with and then marry John Lisle, while William eloped to Spain with either an English or Spanish girlfriend and went on to have twin girls with her. William's father is reported to have built a shrine/monument/church in the South of England to atone for his son's sins. This may be in Surrey.
